Questions for Discussion of Remarkably Bright Creatures

Carla sends:
Hope you have enjoyed reading Remarkably Bright Creatures as much as I did.
If you have the chance to watch "My Octopus Teacher" a show on Netflix, it is supposed to be interesting and insightful.

So questions.

1. What kind of person do you think Marcellus would be if the octopus were human?

2. The Characters in the story need each other even if they don't acknowledge it. What binds the various characters together?

3. Tova feels the need to always be moving.  Cameron on the other hand seems stuck.  Why?

4 Marcellus is an extremely smart octopus.  Is this believable?  Have you ever known any animals who exhibit or demonstrate extraordinary levels of intelligence?

5 The story takes place in the Pacific Northwest and plays a part in the story.  Do you think the story could have been effective if it took place inland or totally different?

6. Tova worries about being a burden to friends since she has no family to care for her as she ages.  Her view seems to change through the story. What are the changes and why does she change?

7. Cameron says to Tova "conscience does make cowards of us all"  What does he mean by this? Do you agree?

8. Marcellus's life in captivity is very different from how his life in the wild would have been.  How do you feel about keeping animals in captivity?

9. Eventually Cameron and Tova realize that they are family.  Can you imagine how their lives are beyond the end of the story.

10. At what point in the story did you finally figure out what Marcellus was trying to tell Tova?

11. Some readers say that they didn't like Cameron?  Did you and did your opinion change?  Were there any characters that you particularly liked or disliked

12. The author explores losing love and finding it again, sometimes in unexpected places.  What makes the connections with others real and truly felt?  Is it connections that make us human or something else?
