Thanks to Carla for these "things to think about for our meeting 10/19/26:
Many of the characters in the story
are real people and there are real events as well. Did you like Kate Quinn's
story, and her use of fiction and fictional characters?
Would you have preferred that she stuck closer to the truth?
What did you think of her comment about men hiding behind her back?
The press tended to trivialize Lyudmilla's record.
Do you feel this treatment of women in prominent or leadership roles remains true today?
There is an American sniper who also seems to be a master of disguises and is in the employ of a shadowy cabal. He also seems to think that Lyudmilla is a fraud. What do you think this fictional character's background is? Was he believable?
Did you know that while snipers in WWII frequently worked in pairs, today the roles of the partners is not the same.
There are situations, events. things portrayed in the story that are not true. Did you notice this without having to research because you have read about events? Or did spend time like I did fact checking.
Did some things just not ring true?
Lyudmilla wrote a memoir which is referenced as the official version in the book. Discuss how you think her memoir may have been altered to fit Soviet accounts/propaganda.
