The Giant and the Librarian
On Monday, we had a good discussion of The Giant’s House, by Elizabeth McCracken. It is told from the point of view of a librarian, but don’t let that dissuade you from reading it. It's a quirky and touching story about a tall boy and a librarian who befriends him. The group was a little smaller than usual – a full circle, but no second row of seats. Most of us thought the librarian in the story had some “problems” and was kind of filling some of her needs through her relationship with James. This was a rather uncomfortable book to read - I felt that hearing other opinions about aspects of the characters helped me to feel more comfortable. Carla brought a printout about a real giant who had been a spokesperson for a shoe company and had other characteristics that would indicate that he was the giant that the book was based on.
